CLAT Exam Pattern – General Overview

The CLAT exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions to be completed in two hours duration.

CLAT Exam – Sections, Marks, Weightage and Questions Count

The testing methodology and parts of the CLAT UG and PG are different. In CLAT UG you will be tested on English, Logical Reasoning, Legal Reasoning, Aptitude Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques.

In CLAT PG, you will be tested on undergraduate subjects like Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Family Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Company Law, Tax, Law, International Law, Labour Law and Industrial Law.

CLAT Exam – Marking Scheme

According to the UG and PG CLAT Exam Pattern from the previous year, you will receive +1 mark for each question that you successfully answer.

There will be a -0.25 mark deduction for each incorrect response.

There will be no deduction or award of marks for questions left unanswered.

Subject-wise CLAT UG exam paper analysis

English Language 

  • This component assesses vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension skills.
  • Reading comprehension questions typically follow texts that test understanding, critical thinking, and inference.
  • Grammar and language: Common questions concern the identification of errors, the rectification of sentences, and the use of language.
  • This section consists of about 450 word excerpts from important historical nonfiction and fiction works.

Current Events, including General Information

  • This section includes general awareness, static general information, and current events are covered in this part.
  • The questions are asked from recent national and international news, events, and developments form the basis for the questions.
  • Knowledge of geography, politics, history, and culture are all considered general knowledge.

Legal Reasoning 

  • This part evaluates the application and comprehension of legal principles.
  • Legal Principles: Respondents may be asked to apply legal doctrines to specific facts or situations.
  • Case Laws: Understanding and interpreting various legal cases and principles might be required.

Logical Reasoning

  • This section tests one’s capacity to evaluate and decipher logical arguments and patterns.
  • Critical Reasoning : Logic sequences, analogies, and syllogisms are all part of critical reasoning.
  • Analytical Reasoning: Common activities include solving puzzles, arranging chairs, and interpreting data.

Techniques Quantitative

  • This component assesses the ability to understand data and perform calculations.
  • Mathematics: Geometry, algebra, and basic arithmetic are frequently covered.
  • Data Interpretation: Tables, graphs and charts are used to test the ability to interpret quantitative data.
